•• Наиболее актуальное сейчас употребление этого слова – в словосочетаниях high profile и low profile. Они уже превратились, по сути дела, в самостоятельные слова и заслуживают включения в словари как таковые. Однако даже в Новом БАРСе (в словарной статье profile) эти словосочетания трактуются не совсем точно. Так, для high profile предлагается перевод резкая, непримиримая позиция.
•• 1. Рассмотрим такой пример: Mainland authorities saw Mr. Lee’s high-profile visit as part of a drive for permanent independence (Don Oberdorfer). Речь в этом предложении идет о визите тайваньского лидера в США, вызвавшем раздражение в Пекине. Ясно, что дело тут не в резкости или непримиримости чего бы то ни было, а в том, что визит широко освещался в прессе, имел большой резонанс.
•• 2. В статье об усилиях США по налаживанию мирных переговоров на Ближнем Востоке слово profile в аналогичном значении встречается три раза. Mr. Clinton discarded high-profile diplomacy months after the conservative Benjamin Netanyahu became prime minister... Итак, profile в данном случае – широкая огласка, «публичность», заметно проявляемая активность. Возможный перевод последнего предложения: Чем заметнее мы старались (чем активнее мы себя вели), тем больше они сопротивлялись.

Здесь возможен такой перевод: В результате решения США и Японии об укреплении их военного союза, японские вооруженные силы получили возможность наиболее активного присутствия в Азии со времен Второй мировой войны.
•• 4. Иногда high profile означает просто известность: It’s not the first time that Jordan, who is one of Russia’s most high-profile foreign investors, has run afoul of visa cops. В статье из журнала New Yorker: ...he has made several high-profile appointments... – он назначил несколько известных фигур на должности (в совете управляющих одного из университетов).
•• Меньше трудностей вызывает перевод словосочетаний low profile, to keep a low profile. Речь здесь, как подсказывают словари, идет о сдержанной, осторожной позиции, нежелании «высовываться», играть заметную роль. Интересно слово low-key (low-key manner – просто сдержанность).

8 cordial
•• * Смысл этого слова неудовлетворительно раскрывается и в толковых, и в двуязычных словарях. Hearty, sincere, warm, сердечный, теплый, искренний – все это совершенно не подходит и даже вводит в заблуждение в следующей фразе:
•• Administration officials describe the relationship between Secretary Powell and Mr. Cheney as cordial but sometimes uneasy. (New York Times)
•• Cordial в данном случае – антоним «теплоты». Речь идет, наоборот, о внешне любезных, вежливых, но по сути холодных отношениях. Somewhat uneasy – конечно, не непростые (хотя переводчики с русского иногда переводят непростые, нелегкие как uneasy. Это ошибка), а натянутые и, может быть, даже несколько нервозные отношения.
•• Отличный пример, характеризующий значение слова cordial, появился в связи с известными высказываниями премьер-министра Малайзии Махатхира Мохамада. Рейтер пишет о реакции премьер-министра Австралии:
•• Australian Prime Minister John Howard, speaking after the interview was published, promised frosty politeness when he met Mahathir on the final day of the summit. “I will maintain cordiality and no more with Dr. Mahathir,” he said.
•• Как видим, cordiality здесь фактически приравнивается к frosty politeness. Именно поэтому (благодарю за это и многие другие полезные замечания участника форума на сайте www.lingvoda.ru, выбравшего псевдоним Аврора Потемкина) cordially yours пишут в сухих, формальных письмах. Можно ли считать «внешнюю любезность» и «ледяную вежливость» полностью синонимичными – не знаю, но в дипломатии это, действительно, из одного ряда.
•• Но, как всегда, есть «но»: в некоторых контекстах cordial выступает в своем «нормальном», т.е. подсказываемом этимологией, значении. По моим наблюдениям, для этого нужен или не оставляющий сомнений контекст, или какое-то добавление типа very. Так, на одной из пресс-конференций президент Буш, отвечая на вопрос о своей встрече с мусульманскими лидерами в Индонезии, сказал:
•• It was not a hostile meeting, nor did I sense hostility. <...> It was a very cordial and good discussion.
•• Здесь в переводе я бы (по смыслу) сказал «теплая, хорошая беседа». Достаточно сравнить примеры в этом и предыдущем сообщениях, чтобы увидеть, что мы имеем дело с очень каверзным словом.
•• Еще один пример из Буша, где можно предложить в качестве нейтрального, почти всегда подходящего варианта перевода слово доброжелательный:
•• The commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks questioned President Bush and Vice President Cheney for more than three hours yesterday in a historic Oval Office meeting, a session that Bush described as “ wide-ranging” and “very cordial.” (Washington Post)
•• И далее в той же статье:
•• Bush and his questioners described the session as amicable and, according to some members, even jovial at times.
•• Здесь amicable явно синоним cordial, а вот jovial – учитывая тему разговора – даже и не знаешь, как перевести (American Heritage Dictionary: marked by good humor; jolly). Бабель любил слово жовиальный, но в русский язык оно не вошло. Предлагаемое БАРСом прилагательное живой непросто вставить в данный текст («беседа иногда приобретала характер живого общения»? – не то). Может быть, дружески-оживленный разговор? (Кстати, английское a lively conversation часто служит эвфемизмом, за которым скрывается перебранка).

•• “ Relevance” has become the buzz word of the Iraqi crisis. From the president on down, leading Bush administration officials have declared that if the United Nations, as it approaches the age of 58, cannot decide to make its authority felt on Iraq, it may as well resign itself to being a debating society, albeit one with a $1.45 billion annual budget.
•• Как часто бывает с модными словами – buzz words, в переводе возникают проблемы. Я уже не говорю о том, что в старых словарях (см., например, БАРС издания 1977 г.) это слово представлено неудовлетворительно. А вот варианты, приведенные в АBBYY Lingvo, – релевантность, значимость, существенность, важность – неплохой набор, и мне кажется, что значимость подойдет во многих случаях, в том числе и при переводе высказывания Дж. Буша, положившего начало дискуссии:
•• The relevance of the United Nations is at stake. – На карту поставлена значимость ООН.
•• Это, конечно, значительно лучше, чем перевод полезность ООН, прозвучавший по радио «Эхо Москвы».
•• Конечно, русский оратор наверняка сказал бы На карту поставлена судьба/поставлен авторитет ООН. И контекстуальный перевод с использованием этих слов был бы верен. Но проблема в том, что модные слова (именно в «модном» значении), подобно терминам, желательно переводить в большинстве случаев одинаково. Только тогда соответствие обладает необходимой «подстановочной способностью». Значимость вполне на месте и в переводе следующего предложения:
•• President Bush <...> said again on Wednesday that the United Nations had a last chance to prove its relevance by adopting a resolution the United States with British help will propose in a few days.
•• Выскажу предположение, что слово значимость в данном случае несколько лучше, чем значение, так как в его семантике присутствует элемент актуальность, значение для сегодняшнего дня. Возможен, хотя, к сожалению, длинноват, вариант соответствие требованиям времени. И, конечно, востребованность (см. это слово в русско-английской части словаря).
•• Чтобы сохранить свою значимость и востребованность, Совет Европы должен <...> (Из речи министра иностранных дел С. Лаврова)
•• Видимо, это попытка выразить по-русски значение, заложенное в английском relevance. В переводе достаточно одного слова: To remain relevant, the Council of Europe should <...>
